Owens Corning Thermafiber® Fire & Sound Mineral Wool Batt
Owens Corning Thermafiber® Fire & Sound Mineral Wool Batt
Thermafiber® Fire & Sound mineral wool batts are semi-rigid insulation products manufactured from inorganic mineral wool fibers, designed to deliver fire resistance, acoustic control, and thermal performance in both residential and commercial construction assemblies.
Core Function
These batts are primarily used within wall cavities, floor-ceiling assemblies, and partitions to:
- Reduce sound transmission (increase STC ratings)
- Provide fire protection in rated assemblies
- Improve thermal insulation performance
Material & Composition
- Made from stone wool (mineral wool) fibers
- Typically contains ~70% recycled content
- Inorganic composition (does not support mold or decay)
Key Performance Features
?? Fire Resistance
- Non-combustible (ASTM E136)
- Withstands temperatures over 2,000°F (≈1093°C)
- Used in UL fire-rated wall and floor assemblies
?? Acoustic Performance
- Excellent sound absorption properties
- Improves STC ratings in partitions and floor systems
- Ideal for:
- Multi-family housing
- Offices
- Mechanical rooms
??? Thermal Performance
- Provides stable R-values over time (does not settle)
- Typical R-value ≈ R-3.7 per inch
Durability & Resistance
- Moisture-resistant (low water absorption)
- Mold, mildew, and fungi resistant
- Non-corrosive to metal components
- Vermin-resistant
- Will not rot or deteriorate over time
Applications
Common uses include:
- Interior partition walls
- Exterior wall cavities
- Floor/ceiling assemblies
- Shaft walls and fire-rated assemblies
- Basement and crawlspace walls
Suitable for both:
- Wood stud framing
- Steel stud framing
Installation Characteristics
- Friction-fit batt (no stapling required in many cases)
- Easy to cut with a knife for tight fits
- Compressible and expands to fill cavities
- Available in multiple thicknesses and widths for standard stud spacing
Compliance & Standards
- ASTM C665 – Mineral fiber insulation
- ASTM E84 – Flame spread/smoke developed
- NFPA 101 – Class A interior finish
- CAN/ULC S114 – Non-combustibility (Canada)
